Even though the movie didn't completely blow me out of the water, I enjoyed it. I was surprised that they didn't show several key moments in the book, such as when she finally finds herself able to grasp meditation and "in the palm of God." That seemed to be a pivotal "finding herself" moment in the book, and the movie didn't show that.
I LOVED the scenery, and of course all of the wonderful food! Can I please have some spaghetti, oh how about RIGHT NOW? And wine of course. Delicious, red wine. And when can we leave for Rome?? Beautiful places. Did I mention the food? Ahhh...

One thing is for sure though. Julia Roberts is as lovely as ever!

I'm dying to see it, but first I must finish the book! I'm half way through the book, and I'm hoping I'll be able to make time to finish it before the movie is out of the theaters!
I too read the book (didn't care for it for the same reasons you mentioned).
The movie was o.k.... but I have a problem with people who seek the truth, but reject any forms of the truth unless it is the truth they want to hear..and then preach their version of the truth as if it is the only truth that matters.
What made the movie redeemable was that Julia Roberts was far more charming and engaging then the author herself was, and the scenery was fabu (but I didn't like the shaky camera). Loved the Italy scenes and the close ups on the food. Mmmm. Food.
Hey Chica - I'm ALMOST finished with the book. I've been reading it ever so casually for about two months. The only time I sit still enough to read is usually when I'm flying.
Looking forward to seeing the movie. Maybe some pasta and Julia this weekend!
When I read the book, I heard a lot of the same criticism - she's selfish, self-absorbed, whiney, etc. But...I was going through my divorce when I read it, and I think that while her book is popular and has lots of readers, unless you have actually been in her shoes, even somewhat, you can't expect to understand. And that's ok - it's not a bad thing. It's just the reality. I never would have known that had I not been through such a tragedy. And any other divorcee will agree - it's not something you can relate to unless you've actually done it.
That said, I'm glad you gave the movie a try! I can't wait to see it. The book really did change my life in that it gave me the knowledge that I wasn't the only one. And that I would, in fact, get through it.
